It is our pleasure to welcome you to the fifth annual Soch: Columbia Pakistan Symposium 2020. Since its inception in 2016, Soch has captured the spirit of intercultural dialogue and diplomatic exchange that is present throughout New York City. As one of the few conferences in the US to focus on Pakistan, we aim to foster constructive dialogue that can produce tangible change within Pakistan and the larger South Asian community.
This year, Soch will be analyzing “Naya Pakistan,” both through a figurative and practical lens. Prior to Imran Khan’s appointment as Pakistan’s prime minister, the term “Naya Pakistan” symbolized a Pakistan that was reformed, just, and filled with hope. Through a panel critically reflecting on the insurgency that has plagued Balochistan--Pakistan’s largest province-- for decades--Soch hopes to understand if and how the metaphorical Naya Pakistan applies to the people of Balochistan. By analyzing Pakistan’s post-colonial history, civil and military institutions, and the impact of journalism on these issues alongside scholars and journalists, Soch hopes to answer the following questions: How has Pakistan’s history, from its partition period to the current era of Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf, impacted the present political climate of these regions? The conversation also aims to highlight recent developments and progress within the turbulent region of Balochistan, focusing on the Baloch separatist movement and the central government’s counter-response.
Along with the metaphorical concept of Naya Pakistan, which is a Pakistan marked by tabdeeli (change), Imran Khan’s rise as Prime Minister of Pakistan has also given this term a literal meaning. With the understanding that Imran Khan and his party are in power, Soch hopes to examine Khan’s economic policies, analyzing the challenges the economy is facing. Alongside experts of domestic and international economies, Soch hopes to understand how the economy--which are very much the cornerstone of Khan’s policies--have impacted Pakistan and its people.
Soch returns on March 7th, 2020 to Columbia University to once again provide a platform that hopes to ultimately inspire individuals to enact meaningful change among their communities.
